Welcoming Big Siblings to Newborn Sessions

Bringing a new baby home is a monumental event for a family, and it's an equally big transition for older siblings. The arrival of a newborn shifts dynamics, and it’s a time filled with a mix of excitement, curiosity, and sometimes, a little uncertainty for the older kids. That's why, at a newborn photography session, making the big siblings feel special, included, and celebrated is one of my highest priorities. These sessions are about more than just capturing the tiny new arrival; they are about documenting the beautiful, evolving story of your entire family.

Making Them Part of the Magic

When families arrive at the studio, my first goal is to connect with the older sibling. I see them, I welcome them, and I let them know they have an important role to play. The studio can be a new and sometimes intimidating place, especially when a tiny, fragile baby is the center of attention. By engaging with them directly, asking about their favorite toys or what they love most about their new baby brother or sister, I help them feel comfortable and valued.

I've found that the best approach is one of patience and play. We don't rush into poses. Instead, we let the older child warm up at their own pace. Sometimes, they are immediately eager to hold and kiss the baby, and other times, they might be more hesitant. Both reactions are perfectly normal and equally beautiful to capture. My approach is always "baby-led," and that extends to the whole family. We follow their cues, ensuring the session is a low-pressure, positive experience for everyone.

Capturing Authentic Connections

Some of the most cherished portraits from a newborn session are those that include the big sibling. The unprompted, gentle kiss on the forehead, the tiny hand holding an even tinier finger, or the proud, beaming smile of a new big brother or sister—these are the moments that truly tell your family's story. My aim is to capture these authentic interactions.

To do this, I use a few gentle techniques. We might have the sibling sit comfortably on a soft blanket and then place the swaddled baby safely in their lap, with a parent right beside them for support. We might have them lie down next to the baby for a sweet, snuggly shot from above. For more energetic toddlers, sometimes the best approach is to simply let them be near the baby, capturing their curiosity and natural movements. If a big sibling is feeling a bit shy or overwhelmed, we can capture beautiful moments of them looking at the baby from a parent’s arms. The goal is never to force a pose, but to create an environment where genuine love and connection can shine through.

The Beauty in Every Reaction

It’s important for parents to know that there's no "perfect" way for a child to react. Some siblings are overjoyed and can’t get enough of the new baby. Others might feel a little left out or less than thrilled about sharing the spotlight. I embrace it all. A pensive look or a slightly grumpy face can be just as memorable and authentic as a happy smile. Years from now, these photos will remind you of this unique, fleeting stage in your family's life.

Ultimately, a newborn session that includes older siblings is about celebrating the creation of a new bond. It’s about bottling up the love, the snuggles, and the unique personalities that make your family yours. As a mother myself, I understand how quickly these moments pass. It is my passion and my honor to create beautiful, heartfelt portraits that will serve as permanent, treasured keepsakes of these early days.
