When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer? Roseville, CA
Planning Your Newborn Photography Session: When to Book, When to Schedule, and Why These First Days Are So Precious
There is something so incredibly sweet about the anticipation of a new baby. The tiny clothes folded neatly into drawers, the nursery slowly coming together, those little kicks reminding you that someone very special is on their way.
And then, suddenly, they’re here.
Those impossibly tiny fingers. The sleepy stretches. The soft, fuzzy shoulders and little lips. The way your baby curls so perfectly against your chest, as though they’ve always belonged right there.
As a mama of four and a Roseville newborn photographer since 2013, I know firsthand just how quickly these beautiful first days pass. One moment you’re bringing your brand-new baby home, and before you know it, those tiny newborn details have already begun to change.
Newborn photography is such a lovely way to bottle up a little piece of this fleeting season.
But one question I hear from expecting parents is: When should we book our newborn photography session?
Let’s talk about the best time to reserve your session, when newborn portraits are typically taken, and how we plan around a baby’s wonderfully unpredictable arrival.
When Is the Best Time to Book Newborn Photography?
Ideally, I recommend booking your newborn photographer during your second trimester or early third trimester, usually somewhere between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy.
Booking while you’re still expecting gives us plenty of time to plan your session, discuss your vision, and reserve space on my calendar around your baby’s anticipated arrival.
Here at my newborn photography studio in Roseville, California, I take a limited number of newborn sessions to ensure each family receives the time, care, and attention they deserve.
Of course, babies have their own plans, and due dates are really just estimates! Booking ahead allows us to make those necessary adjustments once your little one arrives.
And if you’re already nearing your due date—or perhaps your baby is already here—please don’t hesitate to reach out. Depending on availability, I may still be able to welcome you into the studio.
What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
For those dreamy, sleepy newborn portraits, I generally recommend photographing babies within their first two to three weeks of life.
During these early days, babies often still have that wonderful newborn curl. They love being snuggled, swaddled, and tucked into cozy little positions reminiscent of their time in the womb.
It’s a beautiful stage for capturing those peaceful, delicate portraits that make newborn photography so special.
At my Roseville photography studio, I typically schedule newborn sessions for the second week following baby’s due date, with the goal of photographing your little one between approximately 4 days and 3 weeks old.
But here’s something important to remember: there is no magical day when your baby suddenly becomes too old for beautiful newborn portraits.
"Older newborns" are equally precious. Their bright, curious eyes, sweet expressions, and growing personalities can make for some truly lovely photographs.
I adore capturing them exactly as they are.
What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
This is one of the biggest concerns expecting parents have when booking newborn photography.
After all, how can you schedule a portrait session for someone who hasn’t even arrived yet?
Thankfully, it’s quite simple!
When you reserve your newborn session, we’ll use your estimated due date to select a tentative session date.
Once your sweet baby arrives, we’ll confirm whether that date still works or adjust the schedule if necessary.
If your little one makes an early appearance or decides to stay cozy a little longer, we’ll work together to find a suitable date.
My goal is to make this process feel easy and peaceful for you. Those first days with a newborn are filled with enough excitement and adjustment without having to worry about your photography session.
Do I Need to Prepare My Newborn for Their Photoshoot?
One of my favorite things about photographing newborns is that they don’t need to do anything at all.
They simply get to be babies.
Sleepy babies. Hungry babies. Wide-awake, curious babies. Babies who need extra snuggles and babies who are perfectly content being swaddled.
My full newborn portrait sessions allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and all those wonderful little pauses that come with caring for a brand-new baby.
We won’t rush through your session.
Before your appointment, I’ll also provide information to help you prepare, and we’ll discuss your preferences for colors, accessories, and the overall feeling of your portraits.
My photography style is soft, timeless, and intentionally simple. I adore beautiful light, delicate textures, and neutral tones that keep the focus exactly where it belongs—on your precious baby.
Should I Book Maternity and Newborn Photography Together?
There is something especially meaningful about documenting both the anticipation of motherhood and those first days with your baby in your arms.
Your maternity portraits tell the story of waiting. Of growing. Of loving someone you haven’t quite met yet.
Your newborn portraits tell the beautiful next chapter.
I offer both maternity and newborn photography at my Roseville studio, making it easy to preserve these two extraordinary seasons together.
Families who book a full maternity session alongside a newborn session also receive $100 off their maternity portraits.
It’s such a lovely way to remember your journey from pregnancy into those first sweet newborn snuggles.
